About Me

Brent Westphal is the founding partner of Studio Westphal Architecture. Hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, Brent graduated from Iowa State University’s College of Design and began his career at the award-winning Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City, Iowa. Five years later, Brent moved to Kansas City, Missouri and joined Gould Evans Architects—now Multistudio.

In 2020, Brent moved to San Francisco and while working at a small boutique firm in the Castro neighborhood called APPARATUS Architecture, he fell in love with single family residential architecture. From the initial concept sketches, to bathroom tile selections, to solving complex issues on-site with the contractor—the breadth of residential architecture was fascinating, exhilarating, and immensely meaningful to Brent. Managing several wide ranging residential projects at any given time gave Brent a robust understanding of the Bay Area residential design, permitting, and construction processes.

In his free time, Brent is an artist and his work has been exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the Midwest and more recently in Healdsburg, California. He naturally brings this artistic proclivity into his architectural work.

Brent and his partner are also avid outdoor, wine, and travel enthusiasts. Each new place explored has created a deeper reservoir of ideas and inspiration to pull from when designing a home, continuing to shape Brent into a more thoughtful and curious designer.

Why Residential Design?

Brent is passionate about designing exceptional spaces and places; environments equally as beautiful as they are functional; creating moments of unexpected delight while delivering thoughtful, practical designs that will withstand the test of time.

Brent is equally passionate about getting to know his clients and understanding how they live and use their home. He aims to find creative, personalized solutions—tailored to fit a client’s wants, needs, and circumstances.

Residential design work allows Brent to get highly focused on the details and heavily involved with every aspect of a home project, while forming a close bond with his clients and industry partners alike. This type of work is often a highly personal and intimate undertaking and something that Brent does not take lightly. He looks forward to being a guide and advocate for his clients throughout this daunting yet rewarding journey.
